On Thursday I spoke with the ds106 face to face course happening simultaneously at the University of Mary Washington. As this is my first time participating in a MOOC it was a great honor and privilege to get to interact a bit with those students and perhaps offer something inspirational and challenging.
- Creativity is not inherited
- In sports we accept the idea that with practice, we can get better. Why can’t we translate that to art?
- A creative environment can foster creativity
- ds106 is giving you that environment
- Do not accept the lie that you were just not born creative
- We are more creative when we are uncomfortable
- Take something ordinary and make it extraordinary
- Take something complex and make it simple
- Take something new and make it old
- Find inspiration in the world around you

Well, "We Are All Artists" or as those islanders say, "We have no art, we do everything as well as we can." The ds106 is doing it as well as we can!
Thanks for this post! The links are great resources! Can't wait to explore them more!
Can't wait to hear the lecture Tim. I would love to know what your thoughts are on these things.
The talk was a ton of fun! I'll bug Jim some more to get it online soon. What a slacker.
You had me at the title- this is the ultimate message of ds106.

Enjoyed “We Are All Artist” I took a lot from your sports reference, b/c I am new at a lot of this and I am learning a lot through ds106. I played divsion 1 lacrosse my freshmen year of college and playing at that level of forced me to adapt and allowed me to play at a level I never thought I could. So ds106 has began to push myself in a direction of virtual identity that is new and very interesting to me. Also picturing myself as an artists listening to your popup has inspired me and pushed my in the right direction.

Yeah, I don’t think I’m too creative when I’m hungry
But really. I’m creative in my own way: I’m a problem solver. I like to mess with puzzles and such. I do my best work after getting a good night’s sleep, and then starting fresh. Am I an artist? No. Am I a sports star? No. But I’m a problems solver, and computer programming is my tool.

Kudos Tim, a month ago I would have argued with you that creativity is inherited, if you were not born creative, there is no way you can be creative. Forward track, after listening to your piece and ‘everything is a remix”, I am definitely is support of the idea that we all have the potential to be creative. I kind of link your piece to everything is remix because both of you talk about creativity coming about as a result of copying someones work ie, drawing inspiration from the original work of others, making drastic changes to transform it and claiming it as your work. This is really an eye opener. Thanks for sharing.

This was awesome. Very well organized and educated enough to grab one’s attention. THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT IT IS A LIE that we were born artists but we become what we practice. I sometimes get really really creative and sometime i have to think really really hard to come up with a simple concept. So today, I was very happy to listen to someone saying that its just the practice and enviornment that makes you creative, and not something we are born with. I can stop blaming genes now….LOL
